Have you read our D.I.Y. High Flying Super Hero Cape Instructions... Take a look for designing the cape to go with Super Hero Cape Shield. The Super Hero Capes I design for toddlers are quite adorable if I do say so myself ;) And I though I would share with you exactly how I create each of my designs...
Lily & Frog Materials:
- 2-3 sheets of colored felt
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting board
- Cutting square
- iron
- Fusible Webbing
- White Thread
- Superhero Letter Template (slightly altered mine)
Lily & Frog D.I.Y Instructions for Super Hero Cape Shield:
Starting with template from Vanilla Joy, print about 3 copies, just in case you make a mistake. You will need 3 total shield sizes; 1 large size (Big Main Shape), 1 medium size about 1/2 inch smaller all the way around (Middle Shape), 1 small about 1/2 inch smaller than the medium (Letter Shape).
The smallest shield shape will be the letter. Each letter is a little different to design; I suggest using a pencil and starting with the center of the shield shape. The shape is the letter is all up to you.
Three parts of this shield:
- Big Main Shape is White Felt
- Middle Shape is Yellow Felt
- Letter Shape is Purple Felt
Line the back of each 9x12 sheet of felt with fusible webbing. Follow the instructions on the fusible webbing you purchase. There are two parts to fusible webbing; the paper backing and the rough side (webbing). In my case, the fusible webbing is cut to the size of the felt. The fusible webbing is laid rough side down and ironed into place.
This is repeated for all three sheets of felt.
Using your template, create the Big Main Shape from white felt. Fold the felt in half to find the center of the felt, lay the long side of the Big Main Shape Template along the fold of the felt. Using a rotary cutter, cutting square and cutting mat to cut the shape of the Big Main Shape from the white felt.
Using your template, create the Middle Shape from yellow felt. Using a rotary cutter, cutting square and cutting mat cut the Middle Shape from the yellow felt from the template you created.
Using your template, create the "K" Letter Shape from purple felt. Once you have the template for the "K" Letter Shape created, flip it over place it on the paper backing of the fusible webbing, trace your letter, creating a 'Mirror Image" of the letter. Using a rotary cutter, cutting square and cutting mat cut the "K" Letter Shape from the purple felt from the template you created. When flipped back over, the "K" (or letter) will be the correct direction.
All three shapes are now cut and ready for assembly.
Remove the paper backing from the purple "K" Letter Shape, place it centered on the yellow Middle Shape and iron it into place. I would recommend flipping the WHOLE shield over before ironing the purple "K" Letter Shape into place because the iron can burn and wilt the felt. If you flip over the WHOLE shield your hot iron will be touching the paper backing of the fusible webbing on the yellow felt.
Before sewing the "K" Letter Shape to the yellow Middle Shape, peel the paper backing from the yellow felt. I do this step because if you sew the "K" Letter Shape to the Middle Shape with the paper backing still attached, there will be a mess when you try to peel it off. Sew a straight stitch (or stitch of your choice) around the whole exterior of the "K" Letter Shape.
The "K" Letter Shape and Middle Shape are now sewn together. The "K" Letter Shape and Middle Shape need to be ironed and sewn to the white felt of the Big Main Shape. Place the sewn "K" Letter Shape and Middle Shape centered on the Big Main Shape and iron into place. I would recommend flipping the WHOLE shield over before ironing the white Big Main Shape into place because the iron can burn and wilt the felt. If you flip over the WHOLE shield your hot iron will be touching the paper backing of the fusible webbing on the white felt
Before sewing the "K" Letter Shape and Middle Shape to the white Big Main Shape, peel the paper backing from the white felt. I do this step because if you sew the "K" Letter Shape and Middle Shape to the white Big Main Shape with the paper backing still attached, there will be a mess when you try to peel it off. Sew a straight stitch (or stitch of your choice) around the whole exterior of the yellow Middle Shape.
Before sewing the Big Main Shape to the Super Hero Cape, peel the paper backing from the white felt. Center the completed Super Hero Shield onto the Super Hero Cape as instructed in my D.I.Y. instructions and iron into place. I would recommend flipping the WHOLE shield AND Super Hero Cape over before ironing the completed Super Hero Shield into place because the iron can burn and wilt the felt. If you flip over the WHOLE shield AND Super Hero Cape, your hot iron will be touching the flannel (fabric choice) of the Super Hero Cape. Sew the shield into place around the whole exterior of the white Big Main Shape.
