Harry Potter: DIY Harry Potter & Hermione Granger Costumes

Beth Kassay

When the kids are inspired! Last summer we went to Universal Studios and the kids were bit by the Harry Potter bug!  Of course after binging all the movies before we drove to FL, and exploring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter...  These two NEEDED to be Harry Potter & Hermione Granger for Halloween.  Which is PERFECT because Andy is slightly obsessed with all things Harry Potter!

DIY Instructions for BOTH Harry Potter & Hermione Granger costumes...

Don't hate me, but this costume is possibly the easiest costume I have ever thrown together in a day! Pulled together by items we had at home, we knew we would use again and borrowed items as well.

Harry Potter for Zach:

  • Black dress pants (or sweat pants, no one can tell the difference)
  • White polo shirt (or any white collared shirt you own)
  • Grey V-Neck sweater (we got our's from Old Navy)
  • Cranberry and Gold striped tie from Amazon
  • Round glasses from Amazon
  • Long black cape borrowed from a friend
  • Wizard Wands from our trip to Universal
  • Black powder eye liner

Lily & Frog Instructions:

YES, we borrowed or purchased everything and are re-using almost everything...

  • Tie & Glasses: The only item which 'cost' us something was the glasses and tie ($7.99). I was tempted to make on my own, but between the cost of supplies and time - then we would need to buy the glasses - it made NO sense to make the tie.
  • Cape: We are lucky to have family friends who are as obsessed with Harry Potter as Andy. We borrowed their black capes. Again, I was tempted to make to cape, but borrowing from a friend was much easier.
  • Wands: Used from our trip to Universal
  • Clothing: All items are ones we bought and Zach wore again for hims school uniform, church, or special occasions - Win-Win!
  • Lightning Bolt: I used black powder eye liner and a google search to make sure I got it right

Hermione Granger for Lily:

  • Black dress skirt (or black glitter party skirt)
  • White polo shirt (or any white collared shirt you own)
  • Grey V-Neck sweater (we got our's from Old Navy)
  • Cranberry and Gold striped tie from Amazon
  • Long black cape borrowed from a friend
  • Wizard Wands from our trip to Universal

Lily & Frog Instructions:

YES, we borrowed or purchased everything and are re-using almost everything...

  • Tie: The only item which 'cost' us something was the glasses and tie ($7.99). I was tempted to make on my own, but between the cost of supplies and time - then we would need to buy the glasses - it made NO sense to make the tie. We just happened to have an extra pair of glasses.
  • Cape: We are lucky to have family friends who are as obsessed with Harry Potter as Andy. We borrowed their black capes. Again, I was tempted to make to cape, but borrowing from a friend was much easier.
  • Wands: Used from our trip to Universal
  • Clothing: All items are ones we bought and Lily wore again for her school uniform, church, or special occasions - Win-Win!
  • Wavy hair: the night before Trick-or-Treating, I did 2 french braids in Love's hair while it was still wet. She wore the french braids over night and to school, until 2 minutes before we walked out the door (that is why half the pictures she has braids) for the night... when we took out the braids, she had perfect waves.

I L-O-V-E this costume…  We make one adorable Alvin & The Chipmunks Family!
